Klass was born in Vermont and raised in Leonia, New Jersey, the son of Sheila Judicious Klass, English professor and author, and Jazzman Klass, professor of anthropology at Barnard Faculty and the brother of Perri Klass, clever pediatrician, author, educator, and a contributing editorialist for The New York Times.
